Swinging Jazz Concerts: February 26-27, 2010
DAN BARRETT, Costa Mesa CA (trombone). Dan
belongs to a new generation of jazz musicians who have more
than just a passing interest in the music's origins and
development. Dan and his peers draw their inspiration from the
many recordings still available from jazz's early years; they
look to the past masters for musical foundations upon which to
build their own personal styles. This comment about Dan's
playing from John S. Wilson of The New York Times: "(He) is one
of the delights here, a melodist, a colorist who knows how to
use a plunger mute with taste and, in total, a player Duke
Ellington would have loved." Dan currently tours the majority
of the time with BED, an ensemble consisting of long-time
friends and musical cohorts Rebecca "Becky" Kilgore, Eddie
Erickson and Joel Forbes. In addition to his free-lance
activities, Dan continues to pursue his interest in arranging
and orchestration. His writing can be heard on many Arbors
CDs. Barrett has recorded under his own name (Blue Swing and
Melody In Swing are his latest CDs for Arbors Records), and
with many respected jazz artists. A partial list includes Doc
Cheatham, Scott Hamilton, Bob Haggart, Rosemary Clooney, Ruby
Braff, Joe Bushkin, Jay McShann, Buck Clayton and Benny
Goodman! Dan is especially proud of his associations with
Messrs. Clayton and Goodman, for each of whom he played lead
trombone and was a featured soloist.

His music studies continued at Westlake College of Music, the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and studied privately with jazz bassist Ralph Pena. Following college, Colin remained in Los Angeles for several years during which time he performed and toured with a variety of groups including the Four Freshmen, Sue Raney, several years with singer Johnny Mathis and a period of time with the Don Ellis Jazz Orchestra. Since moving to Denver in 1969, Colin has been active in the Colorado music scene and has toured the U.S. and Europe. He had long associations with clarinetist Peanuts Hucko, pianist Ralph Sutton and saxophonist Spike Robinson. He has performed with such greats as Chet Baker, Rosemary Clooney, Dizzy Gillespie, and Joe Williams. In addition to appearing locally, he also performs at jazz parties, concerts and jazz festivals with nationally known artists. Besides his passion for jazz, Colin has for many years enjoyed Latin and Brazilian music. This has rekindled his earlier interest in what is now only a hobby, guitar.
JEFF HAMILTON, Hercules, CA (drums).

Jeff is about. His unique feel and energy are in demand with

variety of musical situations, she now has a full schedule of
ongoing gigs in Portland and her out of town engagements have

RANDY REINHART, Willsboro NY, (trumpet) has been playing his instrument of choice since he was nine. When he reached 18, he began his professional career by listening and sitting in with many different artists in the New York City area which led to Ed Polcer asking him to be one of the many regulars at Eddie Condon's Jazz Club. In 1976 Randy learned that the trombone position with The Jim Cullum Jazz Band was open and he taught himself that instrument and subsequently spent the next ten years with the Cullum group filling the trombone position and second cornet. Returning to New York City in 1986, Randy played with groups such as Vince Giordano's Nighthawks and continued to play at jazz festivals and concerts around the country. Since the late 1990s, he has appeared at venues such as London's Pizza Express with Kenny Davern, John Bunch, Scott Hamilton, and Dan Barrett and toured with Warren Vache's "Swing-Time", produced by George Wein. JOHN SHERIDAN, San Antonio, TX (piano). John began his musical training at 7 years of age and his life was forever changed when at age 8 his father brought home a recording of the Benny Goodman 1938 Carnegie Hall concert. He was immediately taken with the piano playing of Jess Stacy and Teddy Wilson who remain two of his primary influences to this day. John received his Bachelor of Music from Capital University (Ohio) and his Master of Music from the University of North Texas. He joined The Jim Cullum Jazz Band in 1979 where he remained for 23 years. During that time, he performed and arranged for the band's radio series, "Riverwalk: Live From The Landing". His sixth "Dream Band" recording will be released in late 2010 on the Arbors label.
Swinging Jazz Concerts: March 27-28, 2010
HOWARD ALDEN, New York City NY (guitar).
Howard was born in California and began playing at age ten
inspired by recordings of Armstrong, Basie and Goodman as well
as those by guitarists Barney Kessel, Charlie Christian, Django
Reinhardt and George Van Eps. Soon he was working
professionally around Los Angeles playing in groups ranging
from traditional to mainstream to modern jazz. In 1979 he
moved east for a summer in Atlantic City with Red Norvo and
continued to perform with him frequently for several years.
Owen Cordle of JAZZ TIMES writes, "He may be the best of his
generation." And Chip Deffaa of the NEW YORK POST observes that
he is "one of the very finest young guitarists working today."
It seems that the only thing regarding Howard Alden on which
the critics have a debate is whether the remarkable jazz
guitarist is one of the best or simply the
best. Howard can be heard on the soundtrack to the
Woody Allen movie "Sweet and Low Down." He not only played all
the guitar solos but also coached Sean Penn on playing the
guitar for his role in the film. In 2004 Howard was the
guitarist (and musical director) chosen for an all-star line-up
commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Newport Jazz
Festival, touring 50 cities of the United States in addition to
their appearance at the Newport Festival. The 2005-2006 seasons
saw Howard adding his acoustic guitar voice to violinist Mark
O'Connor's Hot Swing on his national concert tour.

Warren Vache. He has a fluent gift of melody and a knack for
spicing it up with a Roy Eldridge-like rasp, a Howard
McGhee-like excitability, and Rex Stewart-like tonal effects."

KEN PEPLOWSKI, New York, NY (reeds). "Ken Peplowski is one of those fine young Americans who are currently setting so much of the pace in all that's good in jazz." - Jazz Journal International. By the time Ken was in his early teens, he was experimenting with jazz, playing in the school "stage" bands, and jamming with many of the local jazz musicians. "By the time I hit high school, I was teaching at the local music store, playing in our family band, and playing jazz gigs around town while still getting up early every day for school." After a year of college, Ken joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Buddy Morrow. In 1980, Ken moved to New York City, and was soon playing in a variety of settings from Dixieland to avant-garde jazz. In 1984 Benny Goodman came out of retirement and put together a new band, hiring Ken on tenor saxophone. Ken loves all kinds of music and would like to find more opportunities to bridge the gaps between musical styles and considers himself an interpreter of material. Basically, he likes a challenge and says he is a sucker for a good melody and loves playing for audiences, big or small. He has performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Newport Jazz Festival, pops concerts, European festivals and clubs, headlined in Las Vegas and is home in NYC doing everything from playing on the soundtracks to Woody Allen movies to taking on the role of music director for interactive French and Italian cookbooks. ANTTI SARPILA (clarinet & saxophones), Helsinki, Finland. Antti Sarpila is one of the few internationally known jazz musicians from Finland. Although based in Helsinki, he performs extensively as a solo artist all over the world. He has been a student of the world famous Bob Wilber during the 1980's. Wilber himself was a student of legendary Sidney Bechet in the 1940's. This legacy is the reason for Sarpila's dedication and respect to the tradition of jazz. He wants to combine the influences captured from the early masters (from Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker) with his own personal style to create what would be best described as "classic jazz". The continuing association between Antti and Bob has reaped many rewards. One of the highlights was in 1988, when Antti was asked to join Bob in doing a "Tribute to Benny Goodman" concert in Carnegie Hall, New York. In 2000 Antti renewed his visit to this legendary concert hall with the Swedish vibraphone player Lars Erstrand. In Finland Antti has his own group, the Antti Sarpila Swing Band, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2007. He has performed and recorded with many artists including Doc Cheatham, Wild Bill Davison, Buddy DeFranco, Vic Dickenson, Panama Francis, Bob Haggart, Scott Hamilton, Jake Hanna, John Henrics, Milt Hinton, Peanuts Hucko, Thad Jones, Dave McKenna, Bucky Pizzarelli, Marshal Royal, Zoot Sims, Dick Wellstood, Frank Wess, Trummy Young and to guest with the Count Basie Orchestra, Metropole Orchestra and Dutch Swing College Band. www.anttisarpila.com.

JOHN COCUZZI (vibes, piano) Sacramento CA.
Swingster John Cocuzzi has New Orleans flavor with East Coast
class. A vocal stylist in the New Orleans tradition, he plays
with passion and intensity on piano, vibes and drums--dance
music and more: ballads, burners, and blues; boogie woogie and
familiar standards, all played in John's dynamic style and
diverse rhythms. His innovation breathes new life into old
tunes. John "swings" in any style he plays, from classic jazz
and blues to big band "jump-jive" and Latin. He can stretch out
in modern styles as well. Smooth or smokin', he livens-up a
room, connecting with his audience and adjusting to suit the
mood and "Let the Good Times Roll." An intuitive performer,
John possesses that musical "fire in the belly," igniting the
crowd with skillful improvisation, "telling his story" through
high-energy, spirited solos. First a drummer, then a piano
player, John didn't add the vibraphone till his late teens when
he was inspired by Lionel Hampton recordings. Since then, he

THE JIM CULLUM JAZZ BAND San Antonio, TX. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band plays jazz in the classic manner, that is, in the style of small, hot ensembles prior to WWII. The band's repertoire covers a lot of ground – from 19th-century cakewalks to the small pre-war Benny Goodman ensembles. The core of the band's music consists of the sounds of Jelly Roll Morton, Original Dixieland Jazz Band, New Orleans Rhythm Kings, King Oliver, Creole Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, as well as a heavy emphasis on Bix Beiderbecke and his followers (e.g., Hoagy Carmichael).
While attending college, Jim Cullum and his clarinetist father, the late Jim Cullum Sr, formed a seven-piece traditional group they called the Happy Jazz Band. Soon thereafter a group of San Antonio business leaders established The Landing, a jazz club on the San Antonio Riverwalk, as a showcase for the Happy Jazz Band. Under Jim Jr.'s direction the band evolved into a nationally acclaimed professional company known as The Jim Cullum Jazz Band. Boasting 45 record albums of traditional jazz, the group has performed with a great number of jazz luminaries and at many famous venues including Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center.
In 1990, Jim Cullum along with Margaret Moos Pick, under the auspices of Texas Public Radio, created the high-profile radio show Riverwalk, Live from the Landing. Riverwalk features the great jazz music of the early 20th century and the jazz luminaries who best extol the music. Riverwalk is distributed by Public Radio International and is broadcast on over 200 stations nationwide.
The Jim Cullum Jazz Band has been one of the groups at Summit Jazz each year since 1983! www.landing.com.
TITAN HOT SEVEN Nashville, TN. The Titan Hot Seven remains one of the hottest jazz bands on land and sea! Hailed by fan, musician and critic alike, the Titan Hot Seven possesses a powerhouse ensemble capable of going from a whisper to a roar in the space of one tune. The musicians' rapport with their audience and each other combines with their volcanically hot playing and between-tune shenanigans, flooding the band with requests to return to virtually every festival, club and concert venue they have played. IVORY & GOLD TRIO Mystic, CT.
