The HOT ANTIC JAZZ BAND was founded in 1979 by five musicians who
discovered that they had a common passion for the music of the legendary
Jabbo Smith and of the black bands of Chicago in the late 20's. The original members were : - Michel Bastide, an eye surgeon, on cornet and valve trombone - Jean-François Bonnel, a student who became later on a music teacher, on reeds and cornet - Gilles Berrut, another student who became a surgeon, on piano - Jean-Pierre Dubois, a consulting engineer, on banjo and reeds - Chistian Lefèvre, an architect, on tuba and valve trombone In 1982 Virginie Suran, a student who later married Jean-François Bonnel joined the band on reeds. In 1983 Stéphane Matthey, a magistrate, replaced Gilles Berrut who left for a more serious medical studying. In 1989 Bernard Antherieu, an agronomist, on reeds and banjo, and Philippe Raspail, a teacher, on reeds, replaced Jean-François and Virginie Bonnel. In 1997 Martin Seck, a German computer engineer, replaced Stephane Matthey. In 2008, especially for the “Summit”, Jean-François Bonnel is back again, replacing Philippe who is booked by his job. Jean-François is presently one of the top jazz musicians of the European jazz spots. So the 2008 band is: • Michel BASTIDE, cornet, valve trombone & vocal • Bernard ANTHERIEU, clarinet, alto-sax, picking-banjo & vocal • Jean-François BONNEL, C-melody-sax, alto-sax, clarinet, cornet & vocal • Martin SECK, piano, washboard & vocal • Jean-Pierre DUBOIS, banjo, clarinet & vocal • Christian LEFEVRE, tuba, valve trombone, piano & vocal The main target of the band is to play for fun as a group of excellent friends enjoying the same musical frame of mind, always surprised by the positive responses of audiences all over the world. Their trips have included a thrilling collaboration with some of jazz’s most impressive pioneers such as Jabbo Smith, Ikey Robinson, Benny Waters, Doc Cheatham, Turk Murphy, Topsy Chapman, Bob Barnard, Hal Smith, Jim Galloway, Humphrey Lyttleton, Claude Luter... If you can imagine, it is a double play on words in French still maintaining an English meaning. In English, we say Hot Antic depicting something, perhaps, a little wild, a little crazy. This is deliberate However, in French, Hot Antic is pronounced "oat ant-eek". It is from this pronunciation we derive two very clever jeux de mots (plays on words). The word "authentique" is pronounced "oat ant-eek", meaning, of course, "authentic". Those of you who are familiar with the Hot Antic Jazz Band, you know that "authentique" is a very appropriate word for the group. Then, the words "Haut Antique" is pronounced "oat ant-eek". Here "haut" means high or upper, and "antique" means, hhmmmm, I'll leave this one for you to resolve. Thus, this latter expression means something like "quality antique" which again is very appropriate for the HAJB. End of the French lesson. |
