This aggregation is Colorado's contribution to Summit Jazz and has
participated every year since its formation eighteen years ago. Three
of the seven are professional musicians while the others have
non-musical professions, but there is nothing amateurish about their
sound.
You may expect spontaneity in their performance and on-stage behavior
because of their leader's near frantic devotion to collective
improvisation as opposed to highly structured arrangements. Their
reverence for classic jazz literature is apparent, yet their strongest
feature is fresh, imaginative interpretations of later jazz and giving a
jazz version on tunes not ordinarily associated with our idiom.
The AFJE plays at the Bull & Bush the first Sunday of each month. When
Alan, whose home is in Washington State, is not present due to
exigencies of time and space, Chas Bowles renames the band to the "Alan
Ain't Here Jazz Band".
